Stephanie: back to her roots

Originally from Italy, Stephanie owned a small café. However, COVID-19 and the consequent lockdowns imposed in Italy jeopardized her business. Faced with an uncertain future and many challenges, Stephanie decided to relocate to the Algarve in 2021, a region she was familiar with, thanks to her family owning two apartments in Lagos. She moved into one of these apartments, looking for a new beginning away from the pandemic’s misery.

The Pivot to Rental Business

With her savings getting less every month, Stephanie persuaded her parents to get a local accommodation (AL) license for the second apartment they owned. This move allowed her to rent it out via Airbnb and other platforms, creating extra income. Stephanie’s passion for photography became very useful. Now she could create beautiful content for her online listings. The beginning of her business was there!

Expansion and Networking

Stephanie developed a large network in the local community of Lagos. Within a few years, Stephanie’s portfolio impressively expanded to include 12 properties, managed with the assistance of a local cleaning lady.

A returning dream: the coffee shop

Despite the success of her rental business, Stephanie started to think of a return to her roots — running a café, similar to the one she had back in Italy.

Her passion for the café culture and desire to create a unique space for locals and tourists alike in Lagos drove her to envision this new venture. Her friendship with Niels, a fellow entrepreneur she met during a surf session, proved useful. Sharing similar business backgrounds and aspirations, Niels offered to support Stephanie’s transition by proposing Rental Valley, his business, to take over her rental management operations. This provided Stephanie with the necessary funding to pursue the opening of her new coffee shop.
