Portugal’s centre-right government is planning to reverse the Socialist policies that were introduced to help combat the housing crisis. According to Negocios online, all the restrictions on short-term lettings (AL) brought in under the controversial Mais Habitação programme, will be removed.
Alojamento Local key changes to expect:
– Lifting of Restrictions on New Licences
– Elimination of Special Contribution (CEAL)
– Freedom in License Transmission
These changes are not automatic and require a change in the law, which may lead to political battles. However, according to the Negocios text, since the special contribution tax was due to start being paid this year in June, it is unlikely that it will ever be implemented. So far, the left-wing opposition has not criticised these changes, despite the political division.
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, believes the government must provide “confidence and stability to those who invest in Portugal, also in the real estate and tourism sector.”
